Coauthored by Brian Kernighan, one of the pioneers of the C programming language, The Practice of Programming is a manual of good programming style that will help any C/C++ or Java developer create faster, more maintainable code.

Early sections look at some of the pitfalls of C/C++, with numerous real-world excerpts of confusing or incorrect code. The authors offer many tips and solutions, including a guide for variable names and commenting styles. Next, they cover algorithms, such as binary and quick sorting. Here, the authors show how to take advantage of the built-in functions in standard C/C++. When it comes to data structures, such as arrays, linked lists, and trees, the authors compare the options available to C, C++, Java, and even Perl developers with a random-text-generation program (using a sophisticated Markov chain algorithm) written for each language.

Subsequent sections cover debugging tips (including how to isolate errors with debugging statements) and testing strategies (both white-box and black-box testing) for verifying the correctness of code. Final sections offer tips on creating more portable C/C++ code, with the last chapter suggesting that programmers can take advantage of interpreters (and regular expressions) to gain better control over their code. A handy appendix summarizes the dozens of tips offered throughout the book.

With its commonsense expertise and range of examples drawn from C, C++, and Java, The Practice of Programming is an excellent resource for improving the style and performance of your code base. --Richard Dragan

The first comprehensive book on software test and analysis

You can't "test quality into" a software product, but neither can you build a quality software product without test and analysis. Software test and analysis is increasingly recognized, in research and in industrial practice, as a core challenge in software engineering and computer science. Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques is the first book to present a range of complementary software test and analysis techniques in an integrated, coherent fashion. It covers a full spectrum of topics from basic principles and underlying theory to organizational and process issues in real-world application. The emphasis throughout is on selecting a complementary set of practical techniques to achieve an acceptable level of quality at an acceptable cost.

    Highlights of the book include
    * Interplay among technical and non-technical issues in crafting an approach to software quality, with chapters devoted to planning and monitoring the software quality process.
    * A selection of practical techniques ranging from inspection to automated program and design analyses to unit, integration, system, and regression testing, with technical material set in the context of real-world problems and constraints in software development.
    * A coherent view of the state of the art and practice, with technical and organizational approaches to push the state of practice toward the state of the art.

Throughout, the text covers techniques that are suitable for near-term application, with sufficient technical background to help you know how and when to apply them. Exercises reinforce the instruction and ensure that you master each topic before proceeding.

By incorporating software testing and analysis techniques into modern practice, Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques provides both students and professionals with realistic strategies for reliable and cost-effective software development.

This publication focuses on the following subjects; understanding and modeling of collaborative work situations which are mediated by technical artefacts, either computational or not; developing appropriate design methodologies for cooperative work analysis and cooperative systems design; developing new technologies supporting cooperation; evaluating and measuring the performance of cooperative systems. The COOP conferences are predicated on the conviction that cooperative systems design requires a deep understanding of the cooperative work of groups and organizations, involving both artefacts and social practices. This is the reason why contributions from all disciplines related to the field of cooperative systems design are considered as relevant, including computer and information sciences (computer-supported cooperative work, group decision support systems, knowledge engineering, human-computer interaction, distributed artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems, etc.) and social sciences (organizational and management sciences, sociology, psychology, ergonomics, linguistics, etc.). This volume puts a special emphasis on the issue of Scenario-Based Design of Collaborative Systems. It discusses issues such as scenarios as means for understanding how computer systems might enhance cooperation and scenarios as a common language between users, developers and management

    Engineering becomes Biology

In our lab this is universally known as "The Bunny Book", for reasons that you can deduce by looking at the cover. You may also deduce that we refer to it sufficiently frequently to have given it a nickname. The reason it is simple - it is an outstandingly comprehensive work of reference for all the ideas and history in the burgeoning field of artificial replication.

Biology is the study of things that copy themselves. It used to be that the only examples we had of such things were those that had come about naturally by Darwin's Law of Evolution. But for the first time we are entering an age of intelligent design, with the only intelligence available to do the designing being our own. People are starting to build biological machines to go along with the natural living machines (including ourselves) that have evolved; at the small scale they are mostly doing this using the construction kit supplied by biochemistry; at the large scale they are simply using the ordinary mechanical and electronic components of conventional engineering.

This is one of the main the books upon which the biological revolution that will result will be founded. None of the consequent creations (nor our children) can escape Darwin's Law, of course - that is as fundamental as the Second Law of Thermodynamics upon which it depends. But we are adding an extra source of change to the random mutations that have driven evolution for three and a half billion years: thought-out innovation deduced from accurate scientific models of how matter, energy, and information behave.

Buy this book to get in at the start of the revolution that will give us the most exciting, terrible, and wonderful machines that have ever been made.

  • Book Description:

In this publication, the author Kristian Kersting has made an assault on one of the hardest integration problems at the heart of Artificial Intelligence research. This involves taking three disparate major areas of research and attempting a fusion among them. The three areas are: Logic Programming, Uncertainty Reasoning and Machine Learning. Every one of these is a major sub-area of research with its own associated international research conferences. Having taken on such a Herculean task, Kersting has produced a series of results which are now at the core of a newly emerging area: Probabilistic Inductive Logic Programming. The new area is closely tied to, though strictly subsumes, a new field known as `Statistical Relational Learning' which has in the last few years gained major prominence in the American Artificial Intelligence research community. Within this book, the author makes several major contributions, including the introduction of a series of definitions which circumscribe the new area formed by extending Inductive Logic Programming to the case in which clauses are annotated with probability values. Also, Kersting investigates the approach of Learning from proofs and the issue of upgrading Fisher Kernels to Relational Fisher Kernels.

    Outdated

I was really looking forward to this book. It appeared to be the ideal book designed with assignments to increase knowledge of methods of animation. Twenty years ago, this was probably a good book. Does ANYONE animate using acetate cels anymore? Does anyone want to? Maybe if I had been looking for a history of animation, I wouldn't have been as disappointed as I am.

In general, I've gotten great books from Amazon, and this book isn't their fault. It just proves that sometimes, being able to browse through the book in a real bookstore will give you a better idea of whether the book is what you're looking for. Being able to search inside the book (as is possible in this case) doesn't always give you enough of the book to really see.

I just don't understand all the 5-star reviews that don't mention any of this. Are they not drawing with computers or Wacom drawing pads? I honestly don't need to know the methods they used on Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willy. If I buy a book on printing, I'm not presented with a description of Gutenberg's press. Sigh.

Usability design is one of the most important--yet often least attractive--tasks for a Web developer. In Don't Make Me Think, author Steve Krug lightens up the subject with good humor and excellent, to-the-point examples.

The title of the book is its chief personal design premise. All of the tips, techniques, and examples presented revolve around users being able to surf merrily through a well-designed site with minimal cognitive strain. Readers will quickly come to agree with many of the book's assumptions, such as "We don't read pages--we scan them" and "We don't figure out how things work--we muddle through." Coming to grips with such hard facts sets the stage for Web design that then produces topnotch sites.

Using an attractive mix of full-color screen shots, cute cartoons and diagrams, and informative sidebars, the book keeps your attention and drives home some crucial points. Much of the content is devoted to proper use of conventions and content layout, and the "before and after" examples are superb. Topics such as the wise use of rollovers and usability testing are covered using a consistently practical approach.

This is the type of book you can blow through in a couple of evenings. But despite its conciseness, it will give you an expert's ability to judge Web design. You'll never form a first impression of a site in the same way again. --Stephen W. Plain

    Topics covered:

  • User patterns
  • Designing for scanning
  • Wise use of copy
  • Navigation design
  • Home page layout
  • Usability testing

In the crowded field of scripting languages, Python has found a niche as the best tool for learning object-oriented design principles. Several elegantly produced books in the past few years, notably David M. Beazley's thorough Python Essential Reference and John E. Grayson's durable Python and Tkinter Programming, have established a foundation of documentation that makes Python a buildable platform for rapid prototyping, as well as good programming practice.

The appearance in April 2000 of a Sams Teach Yourself Python in 24 Hours is evidence of mainstream support. Author Ivan van Laningham has the happy task of teaching an eminently teachable language, and his passion for Python is evident throughout. The 24-chapter recipe is arbitrary, but the book has a well-chosen tripartite subdivision into sections on basic operation, object-oriented design, and GUIs, each of which fulfills its mission. Each "hour" chapter ends with a summary, a Q&A period, a quiz with answers, and, for the ambitious, exercises.

The first hour asks the essential question, "Why Python?" The answer is a collection of flattering adjectives--flexible, extensible, embeddable, elegant, clear, simple--but the author fails to provide a comparison of Python with Tcl, Java, and Perl. Python has a competitive advantage, as found in Part II on object-oriented design basics and strategies. While other languages use o-o principles, none has subsumed it into the mind of the language as much as Python.

Van Laningham's book is illustrated with visually uninteresting black-and-white screen dumps from his Windows Python shell. An early lesson on adding '1' to the decimal representation of a googol (10^100) reveals that Python can print the answer in decimal notation. (Try it with Perl to see what happens.) The modular nature of Python is introduced transparently by incorporating the trigonometric math library.

Teach Yourself Python in 24 Hours is weakest in its editing. Mistakes in cross-referencing are distracting, and Van Laningham's loose, informal English often obfuscates his points. Code snippets in the early chapters grow into major listings by the middle, and proper annotation begins to slacken. A 950-line listing in chapter 16--which is downloadable from the inscrutable www.pauahtun.org--has few annotations. May future editions be shorter, sharper, and cleaner, but just as passionate. --Peter Leopold

FOREWORD
The persistent miniaturization or rescaling of the integrated chip (IC) has led to interconnect dimensions that continue to decrease in physical size. This, coupled with the drive for reduced IC operating voltages and decreased signal-to-noise ratio in the device circuitry, requires new interlayer dielectric (ILD) materials to construct smaller and more efficient devices. At the current 90 nm technology node, fully dense organosilicate materials provide sufficient ILD shielding within the interconnect junctions. However, for the ensuing 65 nm and 45 nm technology nodes, porous ILD materials are needed to further decrease the dielectric constant k of these critical insulating layers. The challenge to generate sufficient porosity in sub-100 nm features and films is a significant one. Increased levels of porosity are extremely effective at decreasing k, but high levels of porosity deteriorate the mechanical properties of the ILD structures. Mechanically robust ILD materials are needed to withstand the stresses and strains inherent to the chemical–mechanical polishing steps in IC fabrication. To optimize both k and the mechanical integrity of sub-100 nm ILD structures requires exacting control over the pore formation processes. The first step in achieving this goal is to develop highly sensitive metrologies that can accurately quantify the structural attributes of these nanoporous materials. This Recommended Practice Guide is dedicated to developing X-ray Porosimetry (XRP) as such a metrology. It is envisaged that XRP will facilitate the development of nanoporous ILD materials, help optimize processing and fabrication parameters, and serve as a valuable quality control metrology. Looking beyond CMOS technology, many attributes of XRP will be useful for the general characterization of nanoporous materials which are becoming increasingly important in many emerging fields of nanotechnology.

  • Book Description:

Thomas Bayes (1702 - 1761) was an English clergyman and mathematician. Until around 1950, he was considered a minor contributor to the history of mathematics, and if he was known at all it was because his name was attached to a simple theorem in the calculus of probabilities. Since then, however, that theorem and the problem Bayes was able to solve with it have become the basis for an important branch of statistical methodology, the problem of inverse probability. Little is known of Bayes' life and few records mentioning him remain. Dale has meticulously researched the material and here gives a picture of Bayes and his time, as well as the intellectual and social climate in which Bayes worked. The writing is both instructive and entertaining, representing superb historical scholarship and excellent mathematics. (these are comments from our reviewers)

  • Book Description:

The mathematical implications of personal beliefs and values in science and commerce

Amid a worldwide resurgence of interest in subjectivist statistical method, this book offers a fresh look at the role of personal judgments in statistical analysis. Frank Lad demonstrates how philosophical attention to meaning provides a sensible assessment of the prospects and procedures of empirical inferential learning.

Operational Subjective Statistical Methods offers a systematic investigation of Bruno de Finetti's theory of probability and logic of uncertainty, which recognizes probability as the measure of personal uncertainty at the heart of its mathematical presentation. It identifies de Finetti's "fundamental theorem of coherent provision" as the unifying structure of probabilistic logic, and highlights the judgment of exchangeability rather than causal independence as the key probabilistic component of statistical inference.

Broad in scope, yet firmly grounded in mathematical detail, this text/reference

Invites readers to address the subjective personalist meaning of probability as motivating the mathematical construction

  • Contains numerous examples and problems, including computing problems using Matlab, assuming no background in Matlab
  • Explains how to use the material in three distinct sequential courses in math and statistics, as well as in courses at the graduate level in applied fields
  • Provides an introductory basis for understanding more complex structures of statistical analysis

Complete with fifty illustrations, Operational Subjective Statistical Methods makes an intriguing discipline accessible to professionals, students, and the interested general reader. It contains a wealth of teaching and research material, and offers profound insight into the relationship between philosophy, faith, and scientific method.

The primary goal of this work is the methodical analysis of the potential, limitations, advantages, and drawbacks of anti-spam measures. These determine to which extent the measures can contribute to the reduction of spam in the long run. The range of considered anti-spam measures includes legislative, organizational, behavioral and technological ones. Furthermore, the conceptual development and analysis of an infrastructural email framework that features such a complementary application, is pointed out.

After the presentation of the technological and organizational facets, the framework is analyzed twofold: its theoretical effectiveness is assessed with the aid of the formal model mentioned above, its storage and traffic requirements are analyzed quantitatively. The author further considers deployment issues, as the framework will have to be integrated in both the technological and the organizational Internet infrastructure.

William Calvin, a neurophysiologist and author of The River That Flows Uphill: A Journey from the Big Bang to the Big Brain, attempts to reclaim the study of human consciousness from physicists like Roger Penrose. Physicists, Calvin suggests, reduce the mind to subatomic particles and mathematical equations, whereas those in his specialty see the seat of consciousness and intelligence in higher levels of brain physiology--the neurons, synapses, and cortex. Calvin is a Darwinist who regards the unique level of human consciousness as the product of evolutionary forces that began with the ice ages two million years ago. The human response to this natural threat, he argues, was to develop mental faculties that allowed high-level communication and, thus, cooperation, leading to complex language capabilities and the distinguishing human characteristic of abstract thought.

Every day we are surrounded by chemicals that are potentially harmful. Some of these we take intentionally in the form of drugs; some we take unknowingly through the food we eat, and the environment around us. John Timbrell explores what makes particular chemicals harmful, what their effects are, and how we can test for them. He examines drugs such as Paracetamol and what it does to the body; Ricin, the most toxic substance known to man; Paraquat, a widely available weedkiller; and how the puffer fish, eaten as a delicacy in Japan, can kill. Using case studies from all around the world, such as the Spanish Oil syndrome which made over 20,000 people ill in Madrid, Timbrell uncovers the facts behind chemical scares. He shows how, with a rational, scientific, and balanced approach, risks can be assessed and managed safely.
